DESIGN CHALLENGE

Design a promotional print publication to help the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum highlight a collection of your choice. Assess the message and do research to inform your design direction. Use Adobe InDesign to create dynamic type, image and message in a visually engaging way. Use design principles with type (use paragraph and character styles), image, and a modular grid to arrange all elements. Design multiple iterations and refine. Think about the user experience to inform all design choices.

CREATIVE SOLUTION

The chosen exhibition for this publication was Jewelry of Ideas: Gifts from the Susan Grant Lewin Collection. Each piece included was selected to represent the wide variety and eclectic nature of the collection. The use of the grid created a uniform composition, while still allowing for contrast of size to create hierarchy and visual interest. Although this brief publication does not display the entirety of the collection, it gives the viewer a highlight reel of some of the best pieces. The captions allow the reader to learn more about the corresponding piece, yet also serve as a design element placed within the grid. The bolded quotes included from the description emphasize the most important qualities of the collection.

This publication was designed to fulfill the Cooper Hewitt brand standards, as stated in their brand manual. The logos, typefaces, and information included are all consistent with the museum’s branding. To provide section variety, it highlights interesting sub-collections included by the same artist using unity.
